History:
Fox William Mulder was born October 13, 1961, in Chilmark, Massachusetts, to William and Tena Mulder. Mulder seemed to have a normal enough childhood and his father's job with the State Department provided the family with a comfortable life. Four years after he was born, Mulder's sister, Samantha Ann Mulder, was born on January 22, 1964. The brother and sister were often shown squabbling over board games and TV shows but it was obvious they were close with Mulder feeling a particular responsibility for the safety of his little sister.

Then, everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked when Samantha disappeared from their house, 2790 Vine Street, Chilmark, Massachusetts, on November 27, 1973. Fox, 12, and Samantha, 8, were home alone, watching TV and playing a game of Stratego, when someone or something took Samantha. While the official story is that she was kidnapped, Mulder comes to believe that his sister was abducted by aliens. The incident tears the Mulder family apart, leading to divorce. Mulder blames himself for Samantha's disappearance and it would seem that his father, in some part, also blames him. Mulder had been left in charge as the eldest child and he failed.

Mulder buried himself in school and, to some extent, sports to hide his pain and guilt. His relationship with his father was never the same, though. The two had never been especially close and Mulder can remember his parents arguing quite a bit in the time leading up to Samantha's disappearance but in his child mindset he didn't see a connection and withdrew from the world further.

Because of his obsession with academics Mulder ended up becoming something of a prodigy, studying at Oxford from 1983 to 1986 and graduating with a A.B. in Psychology - it didn't hurt that he also had a photographic memory. When he returned to the United States, Mulder was picked up by the FBI on October 24, 1986 to work in its Violent Crimes Unit - behavioral sciences department. He had an uncanny ability to get into the minds of criminals - his suspect profiles almost always being spot on - and this leads his fellow students at Quantico to nickname him, "Spooky".

Mulder sets himself apart from the rest of the pack on his first case with the Violent Crimes Unit under the supervision of ASAC Reggie Purdue when one of his profiles helps capture bank robber, John Barnett. In his first year as an FBI agent, Mulder again and again proves himself a formidable foe to any criminal and he quickly rises through the ranks within the FBI. However, he was very much a lone wolf type and his nickname from the Academy still stuck - "Spooky Mulder". However, there was, by that point, another reason Mulder's fellow agents called him "Spooky" - within the first three years of his work with FBI Mulder had stumbled upon the so-called 'X Files'.

Anytime a weird or unusual case came in that the FBI could not solve it usually ended up being filed under 'X' because they ran out of room under 'U' for 'unsolved'. While most within the FBI scoff at the 'X Files,' Mulder found in them a new outlet for his need for something to obsess over. He poured over the files, reading everything he could get his hands on about the paranormal and occult - quickly becoming thoroughly engrossed in what would become his pet project and his life's work.

As it turns out, Mulder had long harbored suspicions that his sister had not just been kidnapped. He felt something else had happened but he couldn't remember exactly what. On on June 16, 1989, Mulder underwent deep regression hypnosis with Dr. Heitz Werber to try and remember what happened the night his sister disappeared. It is through these sessions that Mulder comes to believe that his sister was not kidnapped but, instead, taken by extraterrestrial forces - aliens.

Mulder's interest in the X-Files begins to take over his life - leading him to spend almost any spare moment he has working on them. Thanks to close ties in Congress that he formed during his 'Golden Boy' time within the FBI Mulder is able to force the Bureau's hand into assigning him, officially, to the X-Files section in 1991. A basement office which had once been used for the copy machine was cleared out and the Files and Mulder were moved in. The once promising young agent withdrew from his peers and, after he has cleared up the office some and organized the files, he was rarely seen above ground.

A year went by and Mulder's supervisor and head of the Violent Crimes Unity, Section Chief Blevins became more and more worried that Mulder's work on the X-Files was getting out of hand. In an attempt to reign Mulder back into the fold, Blevins assigned Mulder a partner - Dr. Dana Kathrine Scully. He hoped that the science-minded Scully would bring order to the mess Mulder was creating and, with any luck, debunk the X-Files project so they could dismantle it permanently.

Unfortunately, Scully wouldn't be made into their puppet. She caught on to what they were trying to do immediately and kept it in mind as she worked with Mulder. She was a scientist - a doctor - but she was also loyal and she wouldn't sell out her partner even if it was the reclusive and often surly Fox Mulder. During their first case together - a series of deaths all from the same high school graduating class - she saw things she could not explain. Between the near-comatose boy coming back to this reality and taking his classmates to the forest and her finding an object made of an unidentifiable mental in the nasal cavity of another during an autopsy, the doctor had a hard time not looking at Mulder's theories with a little more respect.

By the end of their first case together it was obvious that Scully had no intention of helping her superiors undermine Mulder. However, she did bring some order to Mulder's chaos and she was one of the few people who could work with him so she was allowed to remain on as his partner. With time, Mulder became a little less wary of Scully.
